Saint Kitts and Nevis Reaffirms Commitment to Civil Society Protections at the 55th Regular Session of the OAS General Assembly

Antigua and Barbuda, June 25, 2025 – The Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saint Kitts and Nevis, delivered a compelling intervention today during the Dialogue of Representatives of Civil Society Organizations and Other Social Actors, held as part of the 55th Regular Session of the OAS General Assembly in Antigua and Barbuda.

This dialogue stands as a cornerstone of the OAS’s work to promote inclusive governance, democratic participation, and respect for human rights, key pillars of the Organization’s mission across the hemisphere. It provides a unique platform for Member States and civil society actors to exchange perspectives and deepen collaboration on shared challenges and solutions.

In his address, Minister Douglas underscored the Government’s commitment to advancing human rights and protecting vulnerable communities. He highlighted the recent accession by Saint Kitts and Nevis to two landmark Inter-American human rights instruments: the Inter-American Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities, and the Inter-American Convention on Protecting the Human Rights of Older Persons.

“These accessions reflect our government’s steadfast dedication to equality, dignity, and non-discrimination,” said Minister Douglas. “They reinforce our vision of a society where no one is left behind.”

Minister Douglas also emphasized significant domestic efforts, including the establishment of the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Ageing and Disabilities, and the implementation of the National Gender Equality Policy and Action Plan.

Addressing historic injustices, he noted recent legislation protecting the rights of the Rastafarian community to freely assemble, worship, and practice their faith, marking a meaningful step forward in fostering religious inclusion and cultural respect.

Minister Douglas was accompanied by Her Excellency Jacinth Henry-Martin, Ambassador and Permanent Representation; Mr. Abdullah Skerritt, Minister Counsellor and Alternate Representative; and Mrs. Adelcia Connor-Ferlance, Third Secretary and Alternate Representative from the Permanent Mission of Saint Kitts and Nevis to the OAS.

Saint Kitts and Nevis remains resolute in its commitment to inclusive governance and the protection of civil society. The delegation reaffirmed its support for dialogue, justice, and participatory democracy as the cornerstone of progress in the Americas.
