FOREIGN MINISTER DR. DOUGLAS DECLARES SAINT KITTS AND NEVIS’ NATIONAL DAY OPEN AT OSAKA EXPO 2025 AS FEDERATION AND JAPAN CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS
Osaka, Japan, August 20, 2025 (SKNIS): Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Economic Development and Investment, the Right Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas, officially declared Saint Kitts and Nevis’ National Day at the Osaka Expo 2025 open on August 20, delivering a powerful and inspiring address to mark the occasion.
This year’s celebration holds special significance as Saint Kitts and Nevis and Japan commemorate 40 years of diplomatic relations.
Senior Minister Douglas warmly greeted distinguished guests, citizens, and friends from across the globe, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to showcase the Federation on such a global platform.
“Our nation, though small, stands very proud, just like Japan, with a very rich heritage and a vibrant culture. Our cultural heritage is deeply rooted in a blend of the indigenous Kalinago people, African and European settlers, both British and French influences, who have been shaped by the sugar era colonialism and emancipation,” said Senior Minister Douglas. “Our language and identity as a nation reflect this mix, where English is officially spoken with the vibrant Kittitian and Nevisian Creole. Across our beautiful, lush tropical landscape, there are villages of African heritage, historical plantation estates, charming Georgian-era towns, several fortresses, but especially the Brimstone Hill Fortress, which is a UNESCO National or World Heritage Site and which collectively anchors our memory in a bygone era.”

The senior minister highlighted the vibrancy of the Federation’s music and cultural festivals, including the annual St. Kitts and Nevis Carnival (Sugar Mas), Culturama in Nevis, and the St. Kitts Music Festival. He underscored that these events are not only a celebration of heritage but also central to the way of life of the people of the twin-island Federation.
“And so today on this special occasion, we reflect on our journey towards independence, our own commitment to unity, and, of course, our aspirations for a sustainable future as a country. Saint Kitts and Nevis is not just a destination. It’s a story of resilience. It’s a story of community. It’s a story of progress. Our economy is mainly a diversified agricultural and services economy, underpinned by tourism and hospitality, international financial services, and information communication technology services, having transitioned from an agriculture-based economy in 2005,” he said.

Senior Minister Dr. Douglas also reaffirmed the Federation’s vision to become the world’s first sustainable island state, emphasising the country’s dedication to promoting peace, prosperity, and resilience on the global stage.
At the Saint Kitts and Nevis Pavilion, guests were invited to explore the nation’s culture, music, sustainable practices, and achievements in science and technology, including the contributions of the St. Kitts and Nevis Robotics Association.
Dr. Douglas concluded his address by declaring the national day officially open, extending an invitation to the world to connect with the Federation and celebrate its story of progress and sustainability.
